How to play

Pick a name and avatar, press Create lobby and send friends the invite link or 6-character code. The lobby creator, the master, chooses the settings and presses Start. After a short countdown the first round appears on every screen, by default a Pokédex number such as #025.

Type the Pokémon's name and press Enter. Spelling does not have to be perfect: capitals, spaces and punctuation are ignored, and one wrong, missing or extra letter is forgiven once your answer is five letters or longer. Suggestions appear after three letters. Stuck? Press Pass (Skip in Closest wins).

Four ways to battle

The master picks a mode before the game starts.

  • Closest wins (the default): everyone locks in one secret guess at the same time. A guess counts by how far its number is from the answer, so a near neighbour still beats a wild stab. Guesses are revealed one by one, furthest first, showing how far too high or too low each was. The closest guess scores 1 point, an exact guess 2, tied guesses all score, and the master presses Continue.
  • Race: the first correct answer takes the round and 1 point. Wrong answers only cost time, so keep typing.
  • Everyone scores: every correct answer is worth 1 point, and the fastest gets 2.
  • Duel: players take turns with their own numbers and score 1 point per correct answer. Rounds count per player, so everyone gets the same number of turns.

Settings: generations, clues and timer

  • Question: number to name, Pokémon to number (you see the artwork and name and type the number), or a random mix.
  • Show: the number, or clues instead. Generation, region and type show straight away. Then, one by one, come colour, legendary or mythical (when it is), evolution stage, height and weight, category, and finally the first letter and length of the name. Clue rounds are always answered with the name.
  • Time per round: unlimited (the default) or 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 seconds. Without a clock a round only ends once nobody is left to answer.
  • Rounds: 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30.
  • Generations: any mix of Gen 1 to Gen 9. Gen 1 alone is the classic 1 to 151; all nine cover #001 to #1025.

Scores, awards and the scoreboard

Most points wins, and a tie shares the win. The results screen ranks everyone, shows a round-by-round log and hands out awards such as Lightning fingers, First to the buzzer and On fire. Closest wins has its own set, including Sharpshooter for exact guesses and Walking Pokédex for the smallest average miss. The lobby scoreboard keeps wins, win streaks and points from game to game. The master can also switch to another game without anyone rejoining, which starts a fresh scoreboard.

Tips for learning Pokédex numbers

  • Learn the borders: Mew is #151, Celebi #251, Deoxys #386 and Arceus #493.
  • Starters usually open a generation, like Chikorita at #152 and Treecko at #252. Generation 5 is the odd one out: Victini sneaks in at #494, before Snivy.
  • Evolution lines tend to sit together, so knowing Charmander is #004 gets you Charmeleon and Charizard.
  • In Closest wins you only need to be nearer than everyone else. If you only know the neighbourhood, name a Pokémon you are sure is close.
  • Start with one generation and no clock. A lobby of one is fine for practising alone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play a Pokédex number quiz with friends online?

Yes. Create a lobby, share the link or code, and up to 10 players battle together live, on desktop or phone. Every lobby has chat and emoji reactions.

Which Pokédex numbers does it use?

The National Pokédex, from #001 Bulbasaur to #1025 Pecharunt across all nine generations. The master can limit a game to any mix of generations.

Can I guess the number instead of the name?

Yes. Set Question to Pokémon to number: you see the Pokémon and type its number, with or without the # sign. Mixed switches direction at random each round.

Can I play on my own?

Yes, a lobby works with one player, which is handy for practice. There are no computer opponents in this game, so invite friends for a real battle.

Is it free and official?

It is free, with no account or download. It is an unofficial fan project, not made by or linked to Nintendo, Game Freak or The Pokémon Company.
