How to play Pokémon Imposter

Create a lobby and share the invite link or the 6-character code. You need at least 3 players, and up to 10 can join from a computer or a phone. Playing in the same room or on a voice call makes it even better.

Each round one player is secretly chosen as the imposter. Everyone else sees the secret Pokémon. Players take turns in a random order giving a single-word clue. Clues that give the name away are refused, so be clever: too obvious and the imposter catches on, too vague and you look suspicious.

After the clue rounds everyone votes for the player they think is the imposter. The player with the most votes is out. If that is the imposter, they get one last chance to name the Pokémon.

Scoring

  • The imposter escapes (the vote picks someone else, or ties): the imposter scores 3 points.
  • The imposter is caught: every player who voted for them scores 1 point.
  • A caught imposter who still names the Pokémon steals 2 points.

Settings

Only the master changes the settings, in the lobby before the game starts.

  • Clues each: 1, 2 or 3 clue rounds before the vote.
  • Time per clue: no clock, or 20, 30 or 45 seconds. With a clock the vote also has a minute and the last chance 30 seconds.
  • The imposter knows: yes, the imposter is told and has to bluff, or no for undercover mode, where the imposter is not told and gets a different but similar Pokémon instead (say Plusle when everyone else has Minun). Nobody knows whether they are the odd one out until the clues stop adding up.
  • The imposter sees (when they know): nothing at all, or the Pokémon's type for an easier bluff.
  • Pokémon: fully evolved Pokémon only (the most recognisable), or any Pokémon. Generations and the number of rounds (3 to 10) can be set too.

Tips

  • As the crew, give clues that someone who has seen the Pokémon would get but a guesser would not.
  • As the imposter, listen to the first clues before your turn and give something general that fits them.
  • Watch who copies the others' clues: that is often the imposter.

Frequently asked questions

How many players do I need?

At least 3 and up to 10. The game is more fun with 4 or more players.

Is Pokémon Imposter free?

Yes. It is completely free and runs in your browser on desktop and phones, with nothing to download and no sign-up.

What is undercover mode?

In undercover mode the imposter is not told they are the imposter. They see a different Pokémon that is similar to everyone else's, with shared types, colour or shape, so their clues fit for a while. If they are caught they find out and can still steal points by naming the other Pokémon.

Can I play alone?

No. Imposter needs other people to bluff and vote, so invite friends with the link. For solo play try Pokédle or Who's That Pokémon?.

Is this an official Pokémon game?

No. It is an unofficial fan project and is not made or endorsed by Nintendo, Game Freak or The Pokémon Company.
