How to play Guess the Type

Create a lobby and share the invite link or the 6-character code. The lobby creator, called the master, picks the settings and presses Start.

Each round shows every player the same Pokémon, with its artwork and its name. Tap one or two of the 18 type buttons, then press Answer. Tap a type again to remove it.

You get one answer per round and it is locked in once you send it. Nobody sees which types you picked until the reveal, but the scores show at once whether each answer was exact, half right or wrong. Not sure? Press Pass to sit the round out.

The round ends when everyone has answered or passed, or when the clock runs out if you set one. Then comes the reveal: the real types, then every player's pick one by one, exact answers last. The master presses Continue to start the next round.

How scoring works

Points reward knowing the full typing, with a bonus for being quick.

  • Exact answer, every type right and nothing extra: 2 points.
  • First exact answer of the round: 3 points.
  • Partly right, at least one correct type but not the exact answer: 1 point. For example, getting only one of a dual-type Pokémon's two types right, or adding a type a single-type Pokémon does not have.
  • Wrong answer, pass or no answer: 0 points, with no penalty.

Results, awards and the lobby scoreboard

After the last round you see the final ranking and a round-by-round log of every Pokémon and its types. Most points wins and a tie shares the win. Awards include Type professor for the most exact answers (at least three) and On fire for a run of three or more exact answers in a row.

The lobby scoreboard adds up wins, points and games across every game in the lobby and shows winning streaks. The master can switch to another game without anyone rejoining, though that starts a fresh scoreboard.

Settings for your type quiz

The master sets these in the lobby before each game.

  • Rounds: 5, 10, 15 or 20. The default is 10.
  • Time per round: unlimited by default, or 10, 15, 20, 30, 45 or 60 seconds. With a clock, anyone who has not answered when time runs out scores nothing that round.
  • Generations: any mix of Gen 1 to Gen 9. Stick to Gen 1 for a Kanto night or open all nine for 1,025 Pokémon. The same Pokémon never comes up twice in one game.

Tips to score more

Every Pokémon appears in its standard form with its current typing, so Clefairy counts as pure Fairy.

  • Always think about a second type. Just over half of all Pokémon have two, and missing one drops you to 1 point.
  • Do not add a type just in case. An extra type also drops you to 1 point.
  • Watch out for older Pokémon that are now part Fairy, like Jigglypuff, Marill and Mr. Mime.
  • Speed only pays when you are right. The bonus point goes to the first exact answer, and you only get one try.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a "what Pokémon type are you" personality quiz?

No. Guess the Type is a knowledge quiz: you see a real Pokémon and pick the types it actually has.

Can I play the Pokémon type quiz alone?

Yes. Create a lobby and press Start on your own. It is a handy way to practise before game night.

Do I have to pick the types in the right order?

No. Water / Fairy and Fairy / Water count as the same answer.

What if I only get one of the two types right?

You still score 1 point. An exact answer is worth 2 points, or 3 if you are the first to get it exactly right.

Is there a time limit?

Only if the master sets one. By default there is no clock, and each round waits until everyone has answered or passed.

Is it free, and does it work on phones?

Yes. It is free, runs in the browser on phones and computers, and needs no download or account. It is an unofficial fan game, not connected to Nintendo, Game Freak or The Pokémon Company.
