How to play Which Shiny Is Real?

Create a lobby and share the invite link or the 6-character code. Up to 10 players can join from a computer or a phone. The lobby creator, called the master, picks the settings and presses Start.

Every round shows four pictures marked A to D. Only one shows a real shiny colouring. Tap the one you think is real. You get one pick per round and it locks in straight away, so choose carefully. Stuck? Press Pass.

The round ends when everyone has picked or passed, or when the clock runs out if you use one. The reveal then marks the real shiny and shows who picked which picture, and the master presses Continue for the next round.

Two kinds of shiny puzzle

Choose one with the Pictures setting.

  • Same Pokémon, 4 colourings (the default): you are told which Pokémon it is and see four versions of it. One is the real shiny artwork. The fakes are its normal or shiny artwork with the main colour swapped for another. Whites, greys and details in other colours stay the same, so they look like believable shinies.
  • 4 Pokémon in one colour: four different Pokémon appear in the same colour, for example all pink. Only one really has a shiny in that colour. The other three are their normal artwork recoloured, so you need to know your shinies, not just spot a strange paint job. The reveal names all four.

Settings

Only the master changes the settings, in the lobby before the game starts.

  • Time per round: unlimited by default, or a clock of 10, 15, 20 or 30 seconds.
  • Rounds: 5, 10, 15 or 20, with 10 as the default.
  • Generations: any mix of Gen 1 to Gen 9 (all nine by default), to make the quiz easier or harder.

Scoring and awards

A correct pick scores 1 point. The first player to find the real shiny in a round scores 2 instead. A wrong pick or a pass scores nothing but costs nothing either. After the last round the player with the most points wins, and tied players share the win.

The end screen shows the final ranking, a round-by-round log of every real shiny, and awards. Shiny hunter goes to whoever spotted the most real shinies, if they found at least three. Other awards cover the fastest average correct pick, a streak of three or more and the most first correct picks. The lobby scoreboard adds up wins, win streaks and points from game to game, until the master switches to a different game.

Tips for spotting the real shiny

  • Never pass when you could guess. A wrong pick costs nothing, and even a blind guess has a one in four chance.
  • Speed only pays when you are right. The first correct pick earns double, but you cannot change your answer.
  • Do not trust small details alone. One fake is made from the real shiny artwork with only its main colour changed, so its accents can look exactly right.
  • In one-colour rounds, ask which of the four Pokémon has a shiny in that colour. The other three do not, even if their normal form does.
  • New to shinies? Start with one or two generations you know well, then add more.

Frequently asked questions

Is this shiny Pokémon quiz free?

Yes. It is completely free and runs in your browser on desktop and phones. There is nothing to download and no account or sign-up.

Can I play the shiny quiz with friends online?

Yes. Share the invite link or the 6-character code and 1 to 10 players can play together, with chat and emoji reactions in every lobby. Anyone who joins mid-game watches and plays the next one.

Can I play on my own?

Yes. A lobby works with just one player, so you can practise alone. This game has no computer players, so invite friends for a real contest.

How are the fake shinies made?

Each fake starts from the Pokémon's normal or shiny artwork and swaps its main colour for another, keeping whites, greys and details in other colours as they are. In the one-colour mode the fakes are other Pokémon recoloured to that round's colour.

Is Which Shiny Is Real? an official Pokémon game?

No. It is an unofficial fan project. It is not made by or connected to Nintendo, Game Freak or The Pokémon Company.
